On my radar: Coins, tassels and Pom poms

It is not a secret that I have been obsessed with everything coins, tassels and pom poms recently. I blame it all on on my belly dance class but also on living in India and being exposed to these items on a daily basis.

Indians love these items and put them on their clothes, their accessories even their trucks. Funnily enough, I used to find them tacky and a bit childish. A few years back, I would not be caught dead with tassels, never mind pom poms. I only did coins. I had a golden coin necklace that my Mother stole from me ( and that I have been trying to replace ever since).

But it is not only India that has a thing for coins, tassels and pom poms. It seems the world of Fashion is also getting their hands on them.

And you can too. Here is how:

- Accessories:

They are a great way to incorporate the trend by small doses particularly if you are not sure if it is really for you. Try getting pom pom or tassels earrings, necklace or even key chains to add to your classic outfits. It will give a new twist to a classic style. And if it is subtle, it will not be too distracting.

- Trims

Another great way to go for these items is to add them as embellishments or trims to your clothes or bags and shoes (or get some that already have them). And don't you think that they are only reserved to Bohemian and Gypsies. They can be very sophisticated.

- All the way

If you want to have fun, just go all the way. Put them on everything you want. The more the funner!

Bear in mind that this is trend you can afford without breaking the bank. If you have a little time on your hands, you can do like me and DIY them. Then you can create a one of a kind item for your own pleasure. I leave with you pictures of people already rocking  the trend.

Mumbai, the love is beginning (in pictures)

Last week, on an impulse we went to Mumbai for a day. We wanted to check some markets because we were told Mumbai had a lot to offer when it came to fabrics. We left Pune early to beat the traffic and arrived in Mumbai by 10 AM. Unfortunately for us, most fabric shops were closed due to Republic day and we ended up going back home to Pune empty handed. However walking around the market, and driving around the city, I found a new love for Mumbai I would like to share with you again with pictures.

This lady had an amazing dotted Lehenga Saree with a colorful printed border.

Mangaldas market which was closed.

This woman's Saree was so gorgeous with vibrant colors of purple and green and peacock feather embroidered in crystals.

As usual, I wished I took more pictures. Even sitting in a car, there was so much Mumbai showed me: from men taking a shower with their underwear on the streets, to people queuing  to get inside a temple. Everything I saw was breathtaking. Also I felt at ease walking down the streets of the markets. People barely looked at me. I was a foreigner in a crowded Indian city, but no one paid me no mind (unlike Pune where everywhere I walk, people stare). I guess that is the difference between a big city and a small town.

Closet cravings : to renew my wardrobe!

Hello everybody!

I have been doing some closet cleaning recently, getting rid all the things that do not fit, are faded or that I do not wear anymore. The exercise made me want to start anew, to build a wardrobe that was really functional (more minimal and more formal) and not only aesthetically pleasing. So for this month, here are few simple things I want:

Closet cravings: February

- Jeans

I have only one pair of jeans and they are too big. I am looking to find two new ones: a fitted boyfriend type and a skinny type to complete me.

- Tops with trims

I have a good collection of blouses but I need more in cotton and preferably with interesting details like bell sleeves. I also want them to be all long sleeves. I am done buying sleeveless things. If I do not find what I am looking for, I am up for making them.

- Basic shoes

I have been buying shoes that would hopefully up my shoe game in a classy way. I think I need a white sandals and red Mary Janes to be done (for now). Well, I am just giving you another excuse to buy more shoes!

- A red blazer

I do not really wear red. It is a color I think does not look good on me except for tomato red. But I have been dying to have a blazer in red and found the perfect thing at Max the other day. I am going to get it!I am just waiting for the price to drop a bit.

What to give on Valentine's day!

Valentine's day is a few days away. For those of you who have Valentines and celebrate it, you are planning to get your love the perfect gift that says how much you appreciate them. But it is sometimes a real problem, because we all know how hard getting the perfect gift is. Here are a few tips to make your gift shopping less hectic.

For her:

We do not want to generalize but Girls are very easy to please. If she truly loves you, she does not need your gift to be expensive, just  thoughtful.

For her

- Flowers
A fresh bouquet of roses or of her favorite flowers will bring a smile to her lips and win you extra points. Unless she is allergic to pollen, I do not know a girl who does not like receiving flowers.

- Chocolates
A nice box of chocolates goodies may ruin her diet but she will appreciate the gesture.

- Lingerie
I know some of you men think that giving a girl sexy Lingerie will win you points. And it may. You just have to make sure she is the type of girl who would like such a gift. Also before you shop for her, know her size and her taste. Personally I think it is a bit tacky, and a gift more for the man than the woman, but I will not say no to sexy lingerie (I am easy like that). So tread carefully. This gift is more for the woman you have been with for a while, and whom you know inside and out.

- Jewelry
A timeless watch, earrings even a necklace will be a sweet touch. Once again, know what she likes before you shop. Study what she wears in order to find out her style. And if you are not about to pop the question, avoid these kind of presents because a small jewelry box may throw her off or kill her hopes. Tread lightly!

- A nice diner
A woman likes a man who goes all out and organizes a nice romantic diner for her. It does not even need to be fancy. It could be at a restaurant she likes (or the place you had your first date if it was successful) or a new joint she wanted to try. Make sure you book in advance to have a table ready.

- A week end gateway
If you can splurge, surprise her with a week end gateway to a location you are sure she will like. It could be in the country, on a beach side, or camping (if she is the outdoorsy type).

If you have no idea what to give your Valentine, just listen to her carefully and see what she does. Women are experts at dropping hints. It can be very subtle sometimes so pay attention.

For him

In some cultures, Valentine's day is all about the woman but if you want to please your man, what is stopping you from doing so?!

For him

- Clothing
Men appreciate clothes as well as women. Get him a nice shirt, a tie or a sweater if the weather ask for it. Know his size before hand and his style to avoid mistakes.

- A watch
A timeless piece will get him excited.

- Cologne
You like it when your man smells good. He likes it too. So get him a cologne you are sure he will appreciate, something sexy, dangerous but classic.

- A new phone
If you can splurge, get him something techie like the latest smart phone out there that he has been eyeing for a while.

- Chill
Men are very easy to please. Make him a nice diner with all his favorites and then put on a show that will make him blush (and forget about his House of Cards marathon) and he will have the best Valentine's day ever. That is, if you are up for it. Otherwise, stick to the gift.

I hope this will help you have the best Valentine's day ever.
