Communion Steez
Hi y’all!
Hope you're all doing well.
As promised in my last post, I wanted to share what I wore to my friend’s son’s communion this past Sunday. So here it is!
Everything except the dress has been in my closet for a while. I’ve been making a conscious effort to shop my wardrobe more often—mainly because I have so many pieces I’ve barely worn (if at all!). It’s time I gave them their moment.
The dress, however, was a spur-of-the-moment purchase at a recent fair. The designer is a friend of a friend, but what really drew me in was the dress itself. It’s so me: a classic silhouette with just the right amount of drama thanks to the vibrant color and intricate embroidery. It's modest—fully covered yet elegant—and it cinches at the waist with a flowy skirt, perfect for my hourglass shape.
My only issue? It’s way too long. And since I’m not one for high heels, I prefer my dresses to stop short of sweeping the floor. I’m just waiting for Eid to pass so I can take this one—and a few others—to the tailor for hemming. Other than that, it was a breeze to wear. Comfortable and effortlessly chic.
Furthermore, I am very proud to say that my dress, bag and watch are all from Senegalese brands, two of them are women owned. I am so happy that I get to wear more and more local brands.
As for the communion itself—it was a beautiful celebration. The person who invited me was a former colleague who turned friend. Her son was also a child I have bonded with over the years because he is so smart, well mannered and funny. Therefore, I had to attend the event. I caught up with some old colleagues, danced a little, indulged in good food. It was hot that day, and the venue was open-air, so I was beyond grateful for my little portable fan. If you're in Dakar, you’ll know the heat’s been relentless lately. I think it's officially time to swap out my wardrobe and bring out the summer clothes.
My former colleagues who are now my friends and my friend's son.
Speaking of celebrations, I have another communion to attend in two weeks. The dress code is “African wear,” and while I have several wax print outfits (African Print), most feel a bit too casual for the occasion. I could go for one of my fancy boubous, but let's be real—sometimes they age me up a bit. Ideally, I’d love to wear a structured dress or a peplum skirt set. I actually have two I could tweak, but here’s the thing—I’m dying to finally use the fabrics I bought in Côte d’Ivoire over a year ago. Yes, they've been sitting untouched in my closet all this time.
Seriously, what am I doing with my life?
What about you? Any communions or events you attended recently? What did you wear?(PS: for more pictures and video, check my Instagram)
