Pyjama to Upgrade your sleeping style.
Hi Y’all,
Let’s talk about pyjama sets.
For the longest time, I was not a “PJ person.” At home, I would usually throw on loose tie-dye dresses or printed muumuus, purchased at the market—comfortable, breezy, and definitely not meant for outside. They did the job, but I never thought much about actual pyjamas.
Lately though, I’ve been changing my mind. I’ve started to see the value in investing in pieces that feel good, look good, and—surprisingly—make you feel a little glamorous even when you’re just going to bed.
Matching sets
My journey into the world of "fancy" pyjamas began about two years ago in Dubai. I picked up two matching sets at Lifestyle: one in satin floral print, the other in pleated metallic fabric. The metallic one was so glamorous I couldn’t bring myself to wear it to bed—I styled the top for outside instead (the pants are still waiting for their debut). As for the floral satin set, I kept telling myself it was too pretty for bed and too hot for Dakar nights. But when I finally wore it, I was stunned—it was not only comfortable but also made me feel instantly polished.
A year later, on another trip to Dubai, I stumbled on a soft-as-clouds matching set at Max. Back home, I practically lived in it for three months straight. I even asked my best friend in Dubai to grab me another in a different color. These sets really do upgrade your sleeping experience—it feels like slipping into a little bit of luxury at the end of the day. Right now, I own three; two satin: in floral print and in leopard print, and one in purple velvet. I had to part ways with a pink one covered in red hearts that I purchased locally around Valentine's day. It was adorable but too tight for my taste. My next dream find? A blue-and-white striped cotton set that could transition to colder weather.
Striped tank dress
Sometimes the simplest things become the best discoveries. On a weekend in Saly, I picked up a green-and-white striped tank dress at Auchan, thinking I’d wear it outside. But it turned out to be too casual, so I tried it as sleepwear—and it was perfect. Lightweight, easy, and ideal for hot Dakar nights. It became my go-to, the piece I reached for after every wash. I recently added a blue-and-white striped version to the mix.
Jersey sets
When winter hits, jersey is my fabric of choice. Soft, stretchy, and cozy. I especially love wide-legged jersey pants paired with a wrap top or tee—it feels elegant without trying too hard. Last year, I found a pair of grey jersey pants with lace trim at the hem and matched them with a belted cardigan. That combo is like wrapping yourself in a hug.
Satin or silk slip dresses
Slip dresses are a category of their own. Growing up, I only saw them on TV, usually worn by women in love making scenes. To me, they were always tied to romance and seduction. When I got married, I had several, mostly short ones with lace trimming. Over the years, I kept buying slip dresses—not just as nightwear but also as layering pieces under sheer outfits. And yes, I still have a little stash of silk and satin nighties (and the racier stuff too) tucked away “just in case” (I get remarried). Sometimes, I pull one out just because they feel amazing against the skin and make me feel like a grown-up woman, especially when paired with a matching kimono.
So, that’s my evolving relationship with pyjamas. From muumuus to matching sets, I’ve learned that good sleepwear isn’t just about comfort—it’s about how it makes you feel. Beautiful pyjamas can transform bedtime into a ritual, just like good sheets or a favorite pillow. If you haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend investing in a set (or two). Your future self will thank you.
