What to wear at a gala

Hello!

Lately, I feel like this blog has turned into one long stream of hotel reviews. Don’t get me wrong—I love sharing my experiences, but I have to admit, I’m not entirely sure what direction this blog (or my other one) is heading. Maybe it’s time to bring everything under one roof in the new year. I’ve been meaning to do this for ages, but procrastination, as always, has been winning. Let’s hope 2025 is the year I finally stop putting it off.

But I digress! Today, let’s talk about something a little more exciting: what to wear to a gala.

A few weeks ago, my high school alumni association, AMEMBA, celebrated its 30th anniversary with a series of events: a blood donation drive, a fair showcasing entrepreneurial alumni, a movie screening, and finally, a gala to wrap it all up in style.

Now, let me tell you—I was excited. Despite attending my fair share of events over the years, this was my first real gala, and I had no idea what to expect. But here’s one thing I’ve learned about Senegalese women at galas: they do not come to play.

Forget toned-down looks or minimalist vibes; Senegalese women show up and show out. I’ve always admired how they embrace glamour and make it look so effortless, but for someone like me—whose style leans on the simpler side—it’s a little intimidating. I own some fabulous pieces, but I rarely wear them because I feel like they’re “too much.”

Lucky for me, my best friend had my back. For my birthday, she gifted me a stunning chocolate brown bustier gown with silver embellishments. It was the perfect gala dress—elegant but not over the top. The only thing missing? A cover-up. So off I went to the market, found the perfect fabric, and handed it over to my tailor with a pattern in mind. And voilĂ —the final result was everything I wanted. Yes, the cover-up was a little big, but I felt comfortable and confident in my dress all night long.

If you’re like me and have no clue where to start when it comes to gala attire, here are a few tips to help you put together the perfect look:

Statement Gown

A gown is always a solid choice for a gala. While trends lean heavily toward corseted, embellished, sheer styles (and they’re gorgeous!), there’s something unique about going for a look that stands out in a different way. Consider gowns with fun details, bold prints, or rich textures. The key is finding a silhouette that flatters you, whether it’s an empire waist, drop waist, or wrap style

Opt for pants or a jumpsuit

We do not necessarily associate gala with pants. However some pants can be extremely elegant depending on the fabric and the cut. I enjoy oversized or wide legged pants in soft or sturdy fabric. You can opt for a well cut pants and add an organza or brocade top going for a soft/ hard look.

Furthermore, I love the idea of a jumpsuit for an easy look. However, to elevate the jumpsuit, I would suggest adding an organza overlay on top.

Go for  a cocktail dress

This look is for the ladies with great legs who are not afraid to flaunt them. Back when I was wearing short clothes, I did enjoy a cocktail dress or two. I like the fitted ones a la bandage dress. But the trend lately is to go a bit longer at the bottom to keep it classy.  Opt for dresses with intricate designs or optic illusion such as 3 D florals to make you stand out.

When in doubt, wear a boubou

A friend of mine already told me that she would wear a fabulous Boubou for a gala. I actually like the idea because Boubou are comfortable but made with the right fabric, and embellishments, they can be a stand out piece. Add an over the top Moussour or headscarf and you shall look regal.

As for the accessories, go bold. Remember, you are meant to stand out. Don’t underestimate the power of statement accessories—be it a bold clutch, sparkling earrings, or embellished heels. Sometimes, it’s the little details that tie your whole look together.  Furthermore, the make up should not be subdued. Try and go out of your comfort zone. However, it is important to find some comfort in your styling. After all, you’re going to be at this event for hours—dancing, sitting, eating. Make sure you choose something that you can actually move in. Feeling comfortable will always make you look confident.

As we are nearing the end of the year, I would like to thank you for reading me and wish you in advance happy holidays. See you in 2025 Inshallah (God willing)
